Twilight heartthrob Robert Pattinson is the object of obsession for millions of young fans around the globe, but the modest actor doesn't understand all the hype. 

"Honestly, I’m not that interesting," says Rob, 22. In his spare time, he prefers low-key activities to going out. "I watch movies, I read, I play all kinds of music." 

Pattinson, who plays the guitar and piano and composes music, has been relaxing in his hometown of London since Dec. 22, where he has been spotted playing small gigs on the local music scene. 

In March, Rob's free time will disappear, when he starts shooting New Moon, the sequel to Twilight. New Moon will be filmed in Vancouver and Italy, and will be produced on an aggressive schedule, shooting back-to-back with Eclipse, the third installment in the Twi book series. 

Since Twilight morphed into a box-office juggernaut, Rob has become one of the most sought-after young actors in Hollywood—a role the private British hunk is not altogether comfortable with. 

"I’ve been getting recognized since the day I finished shooting [Twilight]," he says. "It’s crazy. In L.A., someone spots me almost every single day." The paparazzi's sudden obsession with Rob is part of the reason he prefers hanging out in London when he's not working. There, Rob is much less of a paparazzi target than in the U.S., where his fan base has grown enormously over the past few months. 

"I’ve been uncomfortable in crowds my whole life," he says. "I’ve always felt that everyone is looking at me," he laughs. "I could be in a supermarket and have a full-on panic attack when there’s no one else there. And this was even like five years ago, when nobody knew who I was!"


Hollywood superstardom is something the single Rob will have to get used to for at least the next few years, when the Twilight machine continues to rage on. Meanwhile, the 6'1" heartthrob has other projects he'll be promoting. On March 27, his indie flick Little Ashes (which he did before Twilight) will debut in theaters. In the artsy film, Pattinson portrays the eccentric Spanish surrealist painter Salvador Dali--just the kind of meaty role he relishes. 



Rob, who is very serious about being a good actor, may one day branch out with his own production company. Pattinson, who has already written several scripts, is leery of the money-obsessed Hollywood film industry. 

"I don’t like the way the film industry is," he says. "If you come with a good script and then it goes to the studios and gets financing, it all gets changed because they want to make money. And it’s like, how do you know if it’s going to make money or not? All you’re doing is making it generic when you do that, and making it generic is no guarantee that it’s going to make money, either."


Given Rob's talent and increasing star power, it's foreseeable he may one day be able to make the kinds of films he envisions. "The only way to [do] that is to take risks," he says. "And you need to be able to trust people. So you get a company together with people you know are good and you know work hard and you can make good stuff. That’s kind of what I want to do."

"I try to ignore what people say about me," says Rob, 22. "You tell yourself that everything you do is crap," he laughs. 

Given the deafening fan hysteria he now inspires, ignoring the celebrity hype must be difficult. But it's something the modest Rob does because he's serious about being a good actor. "Acting is something I'm very serious about, and that’s why I chose it," he says. 

Interestingly, the 6'1" British hunk jokes that he's sometimes embarrassed to admit he's an actor. "I’m still embarrassed to say I’m an actor because it's kinda cheesy, so I prefer to say I do something else," he laughs. 

Pattinson can be seen next on the big screen in Little Ashes, where he plays the eccentric Spanish painter Salvador Dali. Rob, who really delved into Dali's neurotic character for the role, says acting is a creative release. 

"I don’t like the word 'acting,' " says Pattinson. "I prefer the word 'creating,' because I want to build a character with an idea that turns into something that people will remember. In every job that I’ve done, I’ve put something of my life into it, I try to add my life into the movie. Every period of my life in which I’ve played a different character, I’ve been a different person."





Rob is a refreshing change from self-centered young Hollywood, not only because he's cute and talented, but also self-deprecating, laughing easily and often. 

Interestingly, he admits that fan adoration can be intimidating. "The more people who tell you [how great you are], the bigger the need for you to prove it," he says. "It’s like everyone is saying how great you are even if you haven’t done anything." 

Adds Rob: "Besides, there’s always a bigger number of people who want to screw you over." Given his talent and likeability, we're sure Rob's star will continue to rise. Little Ashes opens March 27, while Twi sequel New Moon comes out Nov. 20.

Twilight star Robert Pattinson has skyrocketed to international stardom, thanks to the vampire romance's runaway box office, but he's still just a regular guy at heart. 

"I miss being able to go for a walk," Pattinson, 22, told Sweden's Frida magazine in a new interview. "I miss the smell of London...I almost cried because I missed it so much. And I miss my dog [Patty, a female West Highland white terrier]," he says.

While the handsome 6'1" British hunk lives in Los Angeles these days for professional reasons, his setup there is surprisingly makeshift. 

"I haven’t moved [to L.A.] for good," says Pattinson. "I live in a rented apartment where all of the furniture is rented."


Meanwhile, Rob—who recently dropped out of the indie flick Parts Per Billion—is busy with pre-production on New Moon, the highly anticipated sequel to Twilight. Pattinson will begin shooting New Moon in Vancouver in March. The sequel will be filmed back-to-back with Eclipse (2010), the third installment in the best-selling Twilight book series.

Twilight, which has raked in a staggering $279 million worldwide since its Nov. 21 U.S. release, will keep Rob super-busy until at least 2010. The hectic activity will leave the single Rob little time for dating. 


As it is, Pattinson, who has described himself as a loner, likes to keep his personal life quiet—and private. "There’s just a few persons who are worth your time," says Rob. 

"Plus, I’m always moving around and that’s a problem," he adds. "I would rather stay at home doing some creative than [go out] just to talk some crap."

"I haven't changed at all," says Pattinson. "I live the same exact life as before; I have the same friends and the same preferences...I would still rather eat fast food than tofu; I’m a lousy driver, and I always have problems with my junky 1989 BMW."


Yeah, but isn't Rob making more money now since playing the alluring Edward Cullen? "Sad to say, but I [still] don't make that much," he says. "And to tell you the truth, I'd like more," he laughs. 


Given Twilight's stunning box-office success, it wouldn't surprise anyone if Rob's paychecks do get a lot bigger. To date, Twi—an indie flick made for just $37 million—has grossed a staggering $324 million worldwide since its Nov. 21 U.S. release. 

Meanwhile, Rob—who has repeatedly stated that he is unattached—has been in his hometown of London since Dec. 22, relaxing and playing small music gigs on the local club scene. In March, Pattinson will begin shooting New Moon (2009), the sequel to Twilight. New Moon will be filmed back-to-back with Eclipse (2010), the third installment in the best-selling Twi book series. 



His hectic work schedule for the next two years may make having a love life difficult. When asked why he's still unattached, Pattinson suggests his constant traveling makes it hard to nurture or maintain a relationship. 

"The last two years I was abroad the whole time," says Rob. "There was no city I stayed in longer than a couple of weeks. Just when I arrive, I have to leave. That's too little time to build a relationship." 

Fortunately, Pattinson, who has described himself as a loner, doesn't mind spending time alone. "Sometimes I prefer being alone," he says. "I just don't like spending time with other people all the time. Of course, I go out with friends sometimes, but I also enjoy the perfect stillness, for example, of writing. But in the past few years, I've had no time to do that at all." 

With his star on the rise, Rob's free time is sure to get even scarcer, but fortunately, fans will get to enjoy seeing him at the movies. Pattinson can be seen next in Little Ashes, due out March 27, while New Moon shines in November 2009.

Rob, whose boyish good looks and self-deprecating humor have won him legions of young admirers, says he's turned on by self-confidence and talent. "I like talented girls," he says. "If she’s really talented, I don’t really care about the other things."

But Rob insists he's not dating every girl he gets photographed with. "I would rather go out with girls than with guys," he explains, "but if I tried to hit on every girl around me, then I would lose those friendships." Somehow, we doubt the girls would mind.

"There is no film of his where you get bored," says Rob. "I've been obsessed with him since I was a boy. He has been my hero since I was seven years old." 

Among modern film stars, Pattinson wishes to emulate Johnny Depp, 45. "I love the career that Depp has," he says. "I would love to do the same: combine making [big-budget] popular films with independent projects."


But taking on new projects is on hold until at least 2010, when Rob completes filming Twi's two sequels: New Moon (2009) and Eclipse (2010). "You know, I’ve failed at so many things in my life that I’m not afraid of anything anymore," says Rob. "So now I’m like, ‘If it crashes, it crashes," he laughs. "Who cares?"

"I was obsessed with a girl for years but I never talked to her because I was extremely shy," Pattinson recalls. "Years later, I told her about it and she was totally shocked because she hadn’t noticed anything. But she is the reason I ultimately got into acting."


Ironically, Rob is now a major heartthrob with legions of young fans around the world. But he's as stunned by the whirlwind fallout of Twilight's astonishing success as everyone else is. "Last year, I was talking about how I wanted a girlfriend and I didn’t even have a date," says Pattinson. "Now, I am a sex symbol for 16-year-olds, but that doesn’t really get me anywhere, either," he laughs. 



Pattinson, who has morphed from virtual unknown to overnight tabloid sensation, maintains that he's the same person as before. "It’s strange, because I don’t see myself as a star—not for a second," he says. 

As Pattinson gears up to begin shooting New Moon (the sequel to Twilight) in March, his star is rising rapidly. When asked if he wishes he could be immortal (as his character, the alluring Edward Cullen is), Rob is philosophical. 

"No," he says. "Maybe I’m too young to realize the joy of an eternal life, but I’m not afraid of getting old or dying. Ask me again on my deathbed; maybe I’ll answer differently then."

"I’m not stiff as Edward. I want to have fun," says Pattinson. "He's this 108-year-old adult [trapped inside a 17-year-old body], but I’m still a 6-year-old boy [at heart]," he laughs. 

Rob's moving portrayal of the introspective, lovelorn vampire has won him millions of admirers around the world. But Pattinson—who says he's unattached—finds the hysteria inconvenient. 

"I don’t like going outside anymore," he jokes. "It’s so embarrassing to see pictures of yourself at the airport when you look terrible." Indeed, Rob—now a major paparazzi target—gets photographed wherever he goes. 

Yet despite how photogenic the handsome 6'1" Brit is, Rob has the same answer whenever he's asked the usual question: Does he think he's sexy? "Not really," he says. Pattinson revealed that he was shy and awkward as a teen, confessing he had no self-esteem at 17. 


Ironically, Rob says he is drawn to strong women. "Even though it sounds odd, I like self confidence," he says. "What's strange is that I mostly like strong girls, but with them, I have the most problems."


Rob, who's scheduled to start shooting New Moon (the sequel to Twilight) in March, won't have much time for a love life for a while. While Twi has catapulted him to overnight superstar, there's one aspect to being Edward he's not looking forward to. 



"Wearing [amber] contact lenses is the most terrible thing I had to endure to be Edward," Rob recounts. "I have very sensitive eyes and it was a daily torture to put those lenses on every morning. I was waking up at 4 a.m. to suffer this living death. It was like having sand in my eyes all day long." 

But isn't Rob willing to suffer for his art? "Never!" he jokes. "I already told the producers they had to find something else more practical. They can change the color of my eyes with special effects! I don’t ever want to see those damned lenses again (laughs)."


No matter what color his eyes, fans are sure to flock to New Moon when it hits theaters in November, 2009.

Adding to Rob's own mystique is the fact that the actor has not been seen publicly since Dec. 22, when he jetted to London for the Christmas holidays. But his absence has only made his legions of young fans even fonder of him. 

Fortunately for them, international media interviews have recently been released providing some interesting insights into the British heartthrob's introspective personality. In a new interview with Quebec's Le Samedi magazine, Pattinson, 22, discusses what drew him to the Edward Cullen character, what he finds appealing in the opposite sex and his enduring love of music. 

Pattinson, who sounds like a bit of a contrarian, says he was drawn to Edward because of the brooding vampire's fringe status. "Outsiders are always seductive, or at least fascinating," he says. "You can see why they're alone and can't integrate themselves into groups."

Despite his global popularity, Pattinson says he is unattached at the moment. "Je suis toujours célibataire," he says. [I'm still single]. But what does he find attractive? "Like everyone else, I'm attracted to girls who have a head on their shoulders. The other day I was watching 30 Rock and I was charmed by the quirky Tina Fey," says Rob. "Rarely have I seen a woman so sexy." 

But Rob has other celebrity crushes as well. "I'm not immune to the sex appeal of the three Jessicas (Simpson, Alba and Biel). And I'm really fascinated by the grace and beauty of Natalie Portman." 


Pattinson—who says he was once infatuated with actresses Patricia Arquette, Elizabeth Shue and Dana Delaney (all age 40 or older)—likes all types of women. "Age matters little to me, and as I said before, I don't have a specific type," he says.


But Pattinson's true love is music. When asked what career path he would've chosen had he not become an actor, Rob is unequivocal in his reply. "I would've become a pianist," he says. "I play three instruments, I sing and I write songs."


Indeed, Pattinson, who wrote two songs on the Twi soundtrack, is intoxicated by music. "I always say that if acting is my first love, music would've been my Plan B for becoming famous," he says. "That may sound a bit pretentious, but it's true. Music occupies a very important place in my life. I couldn't live without music."

"I suppose if they say so, it's just because I’m British too," he says. He was also pleasantly surprised when told that his beautiful co-star Kristen Stewart, 18, called him "an excellent kisser." Says Rob: "Really? Wow!"


Pattinson, who previously struggled for work (as most actors do), wants to keep acting for as long as he can. "I definitely want to continue with acting for a while now," he says. "I’ve worked for so long now and received nothing [no recognition], so when everything is working, it would feel silly to waste it all away."

Pattinson, 22, has not been spotted out (at least by paparazzi) in either London or Los Angeles since then, but the media fascination with him has only intensified since Twilight's Nov. 21 U.S. debut. 

Fortunately, Rob has learned a thing or two about not letting the white-hot media glare get to him. In 2005, Pattinson starred as Cedric Diggory in the blockbuster fantasy Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. 

Watching how well the film's stars, Daniel Radcliffe, 19, Rupert Grint, 20, and Emma Watson, 18, handle overnight fame and fan adoration has given Rob some perspective. 

"The Harry Potter people...are still very, very normal and sane," says Pattinson. "I think it's because they just ignored the surrealness of their lives from an outside perspective and live their lives normally. They didn't treat anyone any differently and didn't treat themselves differently. And they've ended up being completely fine."


However, it bears noting that the fan hysteria and media spectacle surrounding the young Harry Potter stars wasn't nearly as overwhelming, nor were any of them thrust into overnight worldwide heartthrob status as Pattinson has been.

But the unattached Rob maintains a proper perspective on all the adoration. "I'm not dating anyone," he says. "I don't avoid it, but it's weird just knowing that people will talk about stuff." 

The reserved and private Rob is also careful to avoid coming off as a womanizer simply for being friendly. He says: "If you try and chat people up, everyone's like, ‘You're just an actor. You probably go around sleeping with everybody.’ So it kind of has the converse effect of what you would have thought."


For the moment, the British hunk has a lot on his plate: In March, he will start shooting New Moon, the sequel to Twilight, in Vancouver and immediately afterward will film the franchise's third installment, Eclipse (2010.) 

Separately, Rob has two other movies coming out in 2009. In Little Ashes, which hits theaters March 27, Pattinson portrays the enigmatic artist Salvador Dalí. And in April, Rob can be seen in Summer House, where he plays a boy (Richard) who follows his girlfriend Jane to France for the summer.

"I was a bit of a loner at school, quite anti-social," he recalls. "My first kiss was when I was 12, but I didn't have a girlfriend until I was 18." 

What a difference a few short years makes! Now, the handsome (and single) 6'1" star can't even go to a nightclub without paparazzi swarming him, thanks to his newfound star status courtesy of Twi's monster success. The vampire romance has grossed a staggering $263 million worldwide since its Nov. 21 U.S. debut. Fortunately, Twi's devoted fans won't have to wait too long for a sequel. 

New Moon (the second installment in the best-selling Twilight book series), will begin shooting in March with both Pattinson and his co-star Kristen Stewart, 18, set to reprise their roles as star-crossed lovers Edward Cullen and Bella Swan. 

Production on the highly anticipated sequel will be rushed to accommodate a November 2009 release. And a third installment, Eclipse (2010), will be shot back-to-back with New Moon.



But can Rob handle all the adoration and attention? While he admits the white-hot media glare can be bewildering at times, he remains level-headed about it all. 

"It's funny to see my face on t-shirts, but I'm grateful to be part of this massive phenomenon," says Pattinson. "There are only so many times this is going to happen in your life." 

Interestingly, modest and self-effacing Rob says people often confuse him for his character. "[Some fans] say, "Sorry! I called you Edward." Considering how adored the Edward character is by millions of people around the world, that's hardly an unflattering comparison.

Twilight hottie Robert Pattinson has the world at his feet. The previously unknown British actor has been catapulted onto the Hollywood A-List, thanks to his star-making turn as the mysterious and irresistible vampire, Edward Cullen. 

But Pattinson--who now attracts hordes of screaming girls everywhere he goes--doesn't understand his appeal. "I never really considered myself attractive," says Rob, 22. "I was always kind of gangly in school."


Ironically, Edward is described in the Twilight book series as an unspeakably beautiful Adonis by the protagonist, Bella Swan (played by the beautiful Kristen Stewart). 

Pattinson admits he was intimidated when he walked in to audition for the part and tried hard to focus more on Edward's deep emotional connection to Bella rather than his dazzling appearance. In fact, Rob says he almost skipped the audition because he was unsure he could pull off the physicality required of the stunningly handsome Edward character. 

"That’s the reason I didn’t want to go in for the part initially, because it’s really putting yourself out there," Pattinson explains. "Going in for the audition, I felt like a bit of an idiot. I felt prejudged by anyone who turned up to the casting. I just thought even having the gall to go in means you’re a bit of an arrogant prick." 

But even after landing the coveted role (beating out 5,000 other actors who had auditioned for it), the dashing 6'1" Rob still doesn't consider himself a hottie. 

"Good-looking? Noooo,” he says. "Before I go out to face a crowd, I stare and stare at myself in the mirror until I have to tell myself to stop staring, since there’s nothing I can do.” Is it because he's concerned about not living up to fans' high expectations? "Yes." 

Despite Pattinson's self-doubt, he has become a bona fide global matinee idol, and Twilight continues to tear up the box office, having grossed over $263 million worldwide since its Nov. 21 release. But don't expect Rob to re-watch his hit film anytime soon. 

"I don't really like watching my stuff," he says. "It makes me feel sick. You imagine you look a certain way in your head, and when it looks even the slightest bit different from what you imagine, you go, 'Rubbish!'

Twilight star Robert Pattinson says he has never been in love. "I've never really fallen in love, but I try to be as romantic as possible," says Pattinson, 22. 

That's an interesting admission coming from a young star who's now the obsession of millions of fans around the world, thanks to Twi's astonishing success. 

The 6'1" British hunk, who confesses that he was a loner during his youth, says he has generally had little success with the ladies. "About a year ago, I'd talk to girls and no one would be interested," he says. Obviously, that has now all changed. 

Twilight, which started out as a low-budget indie flick with a small cult following, has raked in a staggering $279 million worldwide since its Nov. 21 U.S. release. 

The vampire romance, which was produced by Summit Entertainment for just $37 million, has mushroomed into a lucrative franchise. A sequel, New Moon, has been greenlit with a $50 million budget and will start shooting in March. And a third installment, Eclipse, will be shot back-to-back with New Moon, with both films to be released in consecutive years.


Twilight's unexpected mainstream popularity has made overnight sensations of Pattinson and his beautiful co-star, Kristen Stewart, 18. But Rob finds his newfound star status overwhelming at times. "I'm a bit of a loner and not that good with dealing with loads of people," Pattinson told U.K.'s Bliss magazine. "Most of the time, going out is a complete waste of time. I'd rather stay in and create something than go out."

So, what does the single Pattinson find attractive in the opposite sex? Interestingly, it's the same qualities that so many find appealing in his mysterious Edward Cullen character. 

"It's being unreadable," says Rob. "It's attractive in women as well, that kind of mystique. It's so obvious, but so few people do have it, especially in characters now and in modern society where there's so many celebrities."

The eyes supposedly say it all, but Twilight star Robert Pattinson had a hard time expressing any emotion through character Edward Cullen’s amber-colored eyes. 

That’s because the blue-eyed Rob was forced to wear amber contact lenses to look the part of the brooding Edward. When he reprises his role in the film’s sequel, New Moon (2009), it won't be without some discomfort, Rob reveals, because the tinted lenses irritate his eyes. 

Pattinson, 22, has already signed a multi-million dollar deal to play Edward again in the franchise's two sequels that will be filmed through 2010. Both are also based on Stephenie Meyer's best-selling book series. 

But there's one aspect of the character he’s not looking forward to. "Wearing colored contact lenses...It was like I constantly had sand in my eyes,” he told OK! magazine. 

“I was wearing them for three months constantly and my eyes never ever accepted them," explains Rob. "It took me 20 minutes per eye every single day and I ended up having to literally fold it into my eyeball." 

The "two orange blobs" in his eyes, he says, curbed his ability to act, because he couldn't properly use his eyes to portray his character's emotions. "It was frustrating as well because normally your eyes are saying something, but if you've got two orange blobs in your face it's so annoying.” 

"The director [Catherine Hardwicke] would say, 'Look at [Bella] (played by Kristen Stewart) like you love her,' and I'd be like, 'I'm trying!' I'm going to have to do it again because we're making the sequel next year." 

The sizzling on-screen chemistry between Pattinson and Stewart elevated the film's romantic story line. Kristen, 18, says the hunky 6'1" Pattinson was perfect for the role. 

"Not to put down any of the other actors who came in [to audition], because they were really good, but everyone came in playing Edward as this perfect, happy-go-lucky guy," says Kristen. "But I got hardcore pain from Rob. It was purely just connection.”

Twilight heartthrob Robert Pattinson may be the romantic ideal of millions of girls around the world, but he wasn't always so popular with the opposite sex. 

Before Twilight emerged as a cult phenomenon, Pattinson — who doesn't even think he's good-looking — tried in vain to land a girlfriend. 

"Last year all I was trying to do was get a girlfriend," Rob laments. "No one else seems to get into a relationship with me; no one wants to commit." 

Obviously, that has all changed now that Pattinson has become an international matinee idol, thanks to his star-making turn as the irresistible vampire Edward Cullen. 

Unfortunately, the problem now may be that Rob is so busy with his career that he won't have any time to date. In March, Rob will begin shooting New Moon, the highly anticipated sequel to Twilight. 

But don't expect Rob to get a swelled head because of his newfound star power. "My dad said success and failure were both impostors," says Pattinson. "That's the best way to go about acting, especially when everything is so extreme."

With his career skyrocketing, onscreen romances will have to do for a while. "I'm single at the moment but I read stories that I'm dating so-and-so, but it's not true," says Robert. "But they are very good guesses because I always fancy the girl they pair me up with." 

Somehow, it wouldn't surprise us if the feeling were mutual. New Moon comes out in November 2009.
