I`m really not that interesting [Robert Pattison]

Robert Pattinson: 'I'm Really Not That Interesting'

Self-deprecating British hunk contradicts millions of fans worldwide
By TheImproper.com

Twilight heartthrob Robert Pattinson is the object of obsession for millions of young fans around the globe, but the modest actor doesn't understand all the hype.

"Honestly, I’m not that interesting," says Rob, 22. In his spare time, he prefers low-key activities to going out. "I watch movies, I read, I play all kinds of music."

Pattinson, who plays the guitar and piano and composes music, has been relaxing in his hometown of London since Dec. 22, where he has been spotted playing small gigs on the local music scene.

In March, Rob's free time will disappear, when he starts shooting New Moon, the sequel to Twilight. New Moon will be filmed in Vancouver and Italy, and will be produced on an aggressive schedule, shooting back-to-back with Eclipse, the third installment in the Twi book series.

Since Twilight morphed into a box-office juggernaut, Rob has become one of the most sought-after young actors in Hollywood—a role the private British hunk is not altogether comfortable with.

"I’ve been getting recognized since the day I finished shooting [Twilight]," he says. "It’s crazy. In L.A., someone spots me almost every single day." The paparazzi's sudden obsession with Rob is part of the reason he prefers hanging out in London when he's not working. There, Rob is much less of a paparazzi target than in the U.S., where his fan base has grown enormously over the past few months.

"I’ve been uncomfortable in crowds my whole life," he says. "I’ve always felt that everyone is looking at me," he laughs. "I could be in a supermarket and have a full-on panic attack when there’s no one else there. And this was even like five years ago, when nobody knew who I was!"

Hollywood superstardom is something the single Rob will have to get used to for at least the next few years, when the Twilight machine continues to rage on. Meanwhile, the 6'1" heartthrob has other projects he'll be promoting. On March 27, his indie flick Little Ashes (which he did before Twilight) will debut in theaters. In the artsy film, Pattinson portrays the eccentric Spanish surrealist painter Salvador Dali--just the kind of meaty role he relishes.

Rob, who is very serious about being a good actor, may one day branch out with his own production company. Pattinson, who has already written several scripts, is leery of the money-obsessed Hollywood film industry.

"I don’t like the way the film industry is," he says. "If you come with a good script and then it goes to the studios and gets financing, it all gets changed because they want to make money. And it’s like, how do you know if it’s going to make money or not? All you’re doing is making it generic when you do that, and making it generic is no guarantee that it’s going to make money, either."

Given Rob's talent and increasing star power, it's foreseeable he may one day be able to make the kinds of films he envisions. "The only way to [do] that is to take risks," he says. "And you need to be able to trust people. So you get a company together with people you know are good and you know work hard and you can make good stuff. That’s kind of what I want to do."

I try to ignore what people say about me [Robert Pattison]

Rob: 'I Try to Ignore What People Say About Me'

Modest British heartthrob avoids believing his own hype
By TheImproper.com

Twilight hottie Robert Pattinson has become a huge star these days, thanks to the vampire romance's incredible popularity, but he remains level-headed by ignoring all the media hype surrounding him.

"I try to ignore what people say about me," says Rob, 22. "You tell yourself that everything you do is crap," he laughs.

Given the deafening fan hysteria he now inspires, ignoring the celebrity hype must be difficult. But it's something the modest Rob does because he's serious about being a good actor. "Acting is something I'm very serious about, and that’s why I chose it," he says.

Interestingly, the 6'1" British hunk jokes that he's sometimes embarrassed to admit he's an actor. "I’m still embarrassed to say I’m an actor because it's kinda cheesy, so I prefer to say I do something else," he laughs.

Pattinson can be seen next on the big screen in Little Ashes, where he plays the eccentric Spanish painter Salvador Dali. Rob, who really delved into Dali's neurotic character for the role, says acting is a creative release.

"I don’t like the word 'acting,' " says Pattinson. "I prefer the word 'creating,' because I want to build a character with an idea that turns into something that people will remember. In every job that I’ve done, I’ve put something of my life into it, I try to add my life into the movie. Every period of my life in which I’ve played a different character, I’ve been a different person."

Rob is a refreshing change from self-centered young Hollywood, not only because he's cute and talented, but also self-deprecating, laughing easily and often.

Interestingly, he admits that fan adoration can be intimidating. "The more people who tell you [how great you are], the bigger the need for you to prove it," he says. "It’s like everyone is saying how great you are even if you haven’t done anything."

Adds Rob: "Besides, there’s always a bigger number of people who want to screw you over." Given his talent and likeability, we're sure Rob's star will continue to rise. Little Ashes opens March 27, while Twi sequel New Moon comes out Nov. 20.

I miss my dog [Robert Pattison]

Robert Pattinson: 'I Miss My Dog'

British hottie misses his hometown & his canine pal, Patty
By TheImproper.com

Twilight star Robert Pattinson has skyrocketed to international stardom, thanks to the vampire romance's runaway box office, but he's still just a regular guy at heart.

"I miss being able to go for a walk," Pattinson, 22, told Sweden's Frida magazine in a new interview. "I miss the smell of London...I almost cried because I missed it so much. And I miss my dog [Patty, a female West Highland white terrier]," he says.

[Editor's note: Frida magazine does not have a website, so we were unable to link to the interview, which is also entirely in Swedish.]

While the handsome 6'1" British hunk lives in Los Angeles these days for professional reasons, his setup there is surprisingly makeshift.

"I haven’t moved [to L.A.] for good," says Pattinson. "I live in a rented apartment where all of the furniture is rented."

Meanwhile, Rob—who recently dropped out of the indie flick Parts Per Billion—is busy with pre-production on New Moon, the highly anticipated sequel to Twilight. Pattinson will begin shooting New Moon in Vancouver in March. The sequel will be filmed back-to-back with Eclipse (2010), the third installment in the best-selling Twilight book series.

[Editor's note: Check out this touching Twilight tribute featuring the smash hit Bleeding Love by Leona Lewis.]

Twilight, which has raked in a staggering $279 million worldwide since its Nov. 21 U.S. release, will keep Rob super-busy until at least 2010. The hectic activity will leave the single Rob little time for dating.

As it is, Pattinson, who has described himself as a loner, likes to keep his personal life quiet—and private. "There’s just a few persons who are worth your time," says Rob.

"Plus, I’m always moving around and that’s a problem," he adds. "I would rather stay at home doing some creative than [go out] just to talk some crap."

New Moon hits theaters in November 2009.

Succes hasn`t changed me [Robert Pattison]

Robert Pattinson: 'Success Hasn't Changed Me'

By TheImproper.com

Robert Pattinson, the 22-year-old star of the hit vampire romance Twilight, is riding an incredible wave of popularity, but success apparently hasn't changed him much. And that's precisely why his legions of young fans adore him.

"I haven't changed at all," says Pattinson. "I live the same exact life as before; I have the same friends and the same preferences...I would still rather eat fast food than tofu; I’m a lousy driver, and I always have problems with my junky 1989 BMW."

Yeah, but isn't Rob making more money now since playing the alluring Edward Cullen? "Sad to say, but I [still] don't make that much," he says. "And to tell you the truth, I'd like more," he laughs.

Given Twilight's stunning box-office success, it wouldn't surprise anyone if Rob's paychecks do get a lot bigger. To date, Twi—an indie flick made for just $37 million—has grossed a staggering $324 million worldwide since its Nov. 21 U.S. release.

Meanwhile, Rob—who has repeatedly stated that he is unattached—has been in his hometown of London since Dec. 22, relaxing and playing small music gigs on the local club scene. In March, Pattinson will begin shooting New Moon (2009), the sequel to Twilight. New Moon will be filmed back-to-back with Eclipse (2010), the third installment in the best-selling Twi book series.

His hectic work schedule for the next two years may make having a love life difficult. When asked why he's still unattached, Pattinson suggests his constant traveling makes it hard to nurture or maintain a relationship.

"The last two years I was abroad the whole time," says Rob. "There was no city I stayed in longer than a couple of weeks. Just when I arrive, I have to leave. That's too little time to build a relationship."

Fortunately, Pattinson, who has described himself as a loner, doesn't mind spending time alone. "Sometimes I prefer being alone," he says. "I just don't like spending time with other people all the time. Of course, I go out with friends sometimes, but I also enjoy the perfect stillness, for example, of writing. But in the past few years, I've had no time to do that at all."

With his star on the rise, Rob's free time is sure to get even scarcer, but fortunately, fans will get to enjoy seeing him at the movies. Pattinson can be seen next in Little Ashes, due out March 27, while New Moon shines in November 2009.

I believe in love at first sight [Robert Pattison]

Robert Pattinson: 'I Believe in Love At First Sight'

22-year-old Twilight cutie is a romantic at heart
By TheImproper.com

Twilight heartthrob Robert Pattinson may be unattached at the moment, but he definitely believes in love at first sight.

"It’s absolutely possible that you can meet someone on the street and suddenly fall in love with that person," says Rob, 22. "That often happens to me," he laughs.

The 6'1" British hunk, who recently said he thinks girls prefer bad boys over nice guys, insists he is always a gentleman. "Even when I don’t follow every rule, I think I’m a gentleman," he says. "I don’t tell [a girl] how she has to be for me. I don’t want her to change herself for me."

Rob, whose boyish good looks and self-deprecating humor have won him legions of young admirers, says he's turned on by self-confidence and talent. "I like talented girls," he says. "If she’s really talented, I don’t really care about the other things."

Not surprisingly, Rob is himself multi-talented. A former teen model, Pattinson plays the piano and guitar and writes music. The sought-after young star has been relaxing in his hometown of London since Dec. 22, where he was recently spotted playing a small gig on the local music scene.

In March, Rob will filming New Moon (2009), the highly anticipated sequel to Twilight. The film will be filmed back-to-back with Eclipse (2010), the third installment in the best-selling Twi book series.

So far, there has been no word on whether Breaking Dawn, the fourth and last installment in the Twi series, will be adapted into a movie. But given Twi's monster box office, it wouldn't surprise anyone if it a fourth sequel were eventually greenlit. To date, Twilight has grossed an astonishing $324 million worldwide since its Nov. 21 U.S. debut.

The vampire romance's staggering popularity has made Rob a paparazzi target in Los Angeles (where he spends a lot of time for professional reasons). When he's in L.A., Pattinson has sometimes been seen out on the town with both male and female friends.

But Rob insists he's not dating every girl he gets photographed with. "I would rather go out with girls than with guys," he explains, "but if I tried to hit on every girl around me, then I would lose those friendships." Somehow, we doubt the girls would mind.

Rob can be seen next in Little Ashes, which opens March 27, and in New Moon, which hits theaters Nov. 20.

I think girls prefer bad boys [Robert Pattison]

Robert Pattinson: 'I Think Girls Prefer Bad Boys'

By TheImproper.com

Twilight sensation Robert Pattinson is now a bona fide Hollywood superstar and sex symbol, thanks to the vampire romance's stunning worldwide popularity. Rob's boyish good looks coupled with his self-effacing personality is a winning combination that has won him legions of young fans.

But Rob, 22, is convinced that girls like bad boys over nice guys (not true, by the way). "I found that women prefer men with small flaws—bad boys," he says. "They don’t always open the door for you, but they promise adventure. A guy like James Dean would always win out against a gentleman."

The 6'1" British heartthrob grew up watching American movies and admired American film icons. He calls James Dean a "cool guy" and has idolized Jack Nicholson for years. "There is no film of his where you get bored," says Rob. "I've been obsessed with him since I was a boy. He has been my hero since I was seven years old."

Among modern film stars, Pattinson wishes to emulate Johnny Depp, 45. "I love the career that Depp has," he says. "I would love to do the same: combine making [big-budget] popular films with independent projects."

But taking on new projects is on hold until at least 2010, when Rob completes filming Twi's two sequels: New Moon (2009) and Eclipse (2010). So far, there has been no word on whether Breaking Dawn, the fourth and last installment of the best-selling Twilight book series, will be adapted into a movie. But given the franchise's staggering popularity, it wouldn't be a surprise if it were filmed eventually.

But either way, Pattinson will be busy for the next two years, which may leave him little time for a love life. Rob, who says he's still single, is refreshingly down-to-earth despite his incredible popularity.

"My mum still thinks I’m an idiot," he jokes. "I’d describe myself as laid-back and not vain." Rob, who was a teen model, says he learned to develop a thick skin early on. "I modeled when I was a teenager," he recounts. "In that job, you learn to take rejection in stride."

With his star on the rise, Rob will be able to carve out the career he wants, if he plays his cards right. But even if things don't work out perfectly, he's okay with that too.

"You know, I’ve failed at so many things in my life that I’m not afraid of anything anymore," says Rob. "So now I’m like, ‘If it crashes, it crashes," he laughs. "Who cares?"

Somehow, we doubt Rob's career will crash anytime soon. New Moon shines in November, 2009.

I had no self-esteem at 17 [Robert Pattison]

Robert Pattinson: 'I Had No Self-Esteem at 17'

22-year-old Twilight hottie recalls being an awkward & insecure teen
By TheImproper.com

Twilight sensation Robert Pattinson has the world at his feet, thanks to the vampire romance's staggering popularity, but he recalls having been awkward and insecure as a teen.

"I was shy, withdrawn and I didn’t have any self-esteem," says Pattinson, 22. "The year that I was 17 was one of the worst of my life, because I was searching for my place [in the world]."

Rob, who is humble and self-effacing (a stereotypically British trait), says he was so shy during his youth that he had a crush on a girl for years without telling her.

"I was obsessed with a girl for years but I never talked to her because I was extremely shy," Pattinson recalls. "Years later, I told her about it and she was totally shocked because she hadn’t noticed anything. But she is the reason I ultimately got into acting."

Ironically, Rob is now a major heartthrob with legions of young fans around the world. But he's as stunned by the whirlwind fallout of Twilight's astonishing success as everyone else is. "Last year, I was talking about how I wanted a girlfriend and I didn’t even have a date," says Pattinson. "Now, I am a sex symbol for 16-year-olds, but that doesn’t really get me anywhere, either," he laughs.

Pattinson, who has morphed from virtual unknown to overnight tabloid sensation, maintains that he's the same person as before. "It’s strange, because I don’t see myself as a star—not for a second," he says.

As Pattinson gears up to begin shooting New Moon (the sequel to Twilight) in March, his star is rising rapidly. When asked if he wishes he could be immortal (as his character, the alluring Edward Cullen is), Rob is philosophical.

"No," he says. "Maybe I’m too young to realize the joy of an eternal life, but I’m not afraid of getting old or dying. Ask me again on my deathbed; maybe I’ll answer differently then."

New Moon shines in November, 2009.

I want to have fun [Robert Pattison]

Robert Pattinson: 'I Want to Have Fun'

British actor insists he's nothing like the somber Edward Cullen
By TheImproper.com

Fans of Twilight star Robert Pattinson often mistake him for Edward Cullen, the alluring vampire he plays in the blockbuster film. But Rob, 22, insists he's nothing like the brooding Edward.

"I’m not stiff as Edward. I want to have fun," says Pattinson. "He's this 108-year-old adult [trapped inside a 17-year-old body], but I’m still a 6-year-old boy [at heart]," he laughs.

Rob's moving portrayal of the introspective, lovelorn vampire has won him millions of admirers around the world. But Pattinson—who says he's unattached—finds the hysteria inconvenient.

"I don’t like going outside anymore," he jokes. "It’s so embarrassing to see pictures of yourself at the airport when you look terrible." Indeed, Rob—now a major paparazzi target—gets photographed wherever he goes.

Yet despite how photogenic the handsome 6'1" Brit is, Rob has the same answer whenever he's asked the usual question: Does he think he's sexy? "Not really," he says. Pattinson revealed that he was shy and awkward as a teen, confessing he had no self-esteem at 17.

Ironically, Rob says he is drawn to strong women. "Even though it sounds odd, I like self confidence," he says. "What's strange is that I mostly like strong girls, but with them, I have the most problems."

Rob, who's scheduled to start shooting New Moon (the sequel to Twilight) in March, won't have much time for a love life for a while. While Twi has catapulted him to overnight superstar, there's one aspect to being Edward he's not looking forward to.

"Wearing [amber] contact lenses is the most terrible thing I had to endure to be Edward," Rob recounts. "I have very sensitive eyes and it was a daily torture to put those lenses on every morning. I was waking up at 4 a.m. to suffer this living death. It was like having sand in my eyes all day long."

But isn't Rob willing to suffer for his art? "Never!" he jokes. "I already told the producers they had to find something else more practical. They can change the color of my eyes with special effects! I don’t ever want to see those damned lenses again (laughs)."

No matter what color his eyes, fans are sure to flock to New Moon when it hits theaters in November, 2009.

I couldn`t live without music [Robert Pattison]

Robert Pattinson: 'I Couldn't Live Without Music'

22-year-old Brit says music is an important part of his life
By Samantha Chang

Twilight star Robert Pattinson has become an overnight celebrity since starring as the alluring Edward Cullen in the hit vampire romance.

Adding to Rob's own mystique is the fact that the actor has not been seen publicly since Dec. 22, when he jetted to London for the Christmas holidays. But his absence has only made his legions of young fans even fonder of him.

Fortunately for them, international media interviews have recently been released providing some interesting insights into the British heartthrob's introspective personality. In a new interview with Quebec's Le Samedi magazine, Pattinson, 22, discusses what drew him to the Edward Cullen character, what he finds appealing in the opposite sex and his enduring love of music.

Pattinson, who sounds like a bit of a contrarian, says he was drawn to Edward because of the brooding vampire's fringe status. "Outsiders are always seductive, or at least fascinating," he says. "You can see why they're alone and can't integrate themselves into groups."

[Editor's note: Samedi doesn't have a website, so we were unable to link to the interview, which is in French; we have translated some key excerpts and pasted a partial scan below.]

Ironically, Twi—which began as a teen cult phenomenon—has mushroomed into full-blown mainstream popularity. So far, the tiny indie flick has grossed an astonishing $284 million worldwide since its Nov. 21 U.S. release.

A sequel, New Moon (2009), will begin shooting in March, and will be filmed back-to-back with Eclipse (2010), the third installment in the best-selling Twilight book series.

As previously reported, the self-deprecating Pattinson initially was intimidated by the idea of playing Edward, who is described as unspeakably beautiful—an Adonis. "I really liked Edward's personality but I asked myself if I was indeed the right actor for the role," Rob recounts. "He is described as being a rare beauty, and that's not what I see in my mirror every morning."

Despite his global popularity, Pattinson says he is unattached at the moment. "Je suis toujours célibataire," he says. [I'm still single]. But what does he find attractive? "Like everyone else, I'm attracted to girls who have a head on their shoulders. The other day I was watching 30 Rock and I was charmed by the quirky Tina Fey," says Rob. "Rarely have I seen a woman so sexy."

But Rob has other celebrity crushes as well. "I'm not immune to the sex appeal of the three Jessicas (Simpson, Alba and Biel). And I'm really fascinated by the grace and beauty of Natalie Portman."

Pattinson—who says he was once infatuated with actresses Patricia Arquette, Elizabeth Shue and Dana Delaney (all age 40 or older)—likes all types of women. "Age matters little to me, and as I said before, I don't have a specific type," he says.

But Pattinson's true love is music. When asked what career path he would've chosen had he not become an actor, Rob is unequivocal in his reply. "I would've become a pianist," he says. "I play three instruments, I sing and I write songs."

Indeed, Pattinson, who wrote two songs on the Twi soundtrack, is intoxicated by music. "I always say that if acting is my first love, music would've been my Plan B for becoming famous," he says. "That may sound a bit pretentious, but it's true. Music occupies a very important place in my life. I couldn't live without music."

Twilight shows love conquers all [Robert Pattison]

Rob Pattinson: 'Twilight Shows Love Conquers All'

By TheImproper.com

Twilight star Robert Pattinson says the message behind the hit vampire romance is that love does indeed conquer all.

"It's a love story that shows that nothing is impossible," Pattinson told Colombia's Tu magazine in a new interview. "If you really love someone, you can overcome any obstacle."

[Editor's note: Tu magazine does not have a website, so we were unable to link to the interview, which is also entirely in Spanish.]

Pattinson, 22, is a hot commodity these days, thanks to Twi's monster box-office success. So far, the film has grossed an astonishing $282 million worldwide since its Nov. 21 U.S. release. A sequel, New Moon (2009), will begin shooting in March, and will be filmed back-to-back with its sequel, Eclipse (2010).

Despite the deafening buzz surrounding the Twi machine, Rob has not been seen publicly since Dec. 22, when he jetted home to London to spend the Christmas holidays with his family. Pattinson, who previously starred as Cedric Diggory in the 2005 blockbuster Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, was an unknown before Twi mania catapulted him to overnight sensation. Now, the handsome 6'1" British hunk can't go anywhere without attracting swarms of paparazzi and screaming fans.

[Editor's note: Check out this video tribute to Edward & Bella featuring the hit Because of You by Kelly Clarkson.]

Indeed, Rob recently made international headlines when he cut the trademark tousled hair he sported as sexy vampire Edward Cullen. But why did he do it? "That’s why I wanted to get a new haircut: When someone says that something is a trademark, you better get rid of it," explains Pattinson.

The self-deprecating London native seems to have his head squarely on his shoulders. When asked about industry scuttlebutt comparing him to heartthrob Jude Law, Rob remains modest. "I suppose if they say so, it's just because I’m British too," he says. He was also pleasantly surprised when told that his beautiful co-star Kristen Stewart, 18, called him "an excellent kisser." Says Rob: "Really? Wow!"

Pattinson, who previously struggled for work (as most actors do), wants to keep acting for as long as he can. "I definitely want to continue with acting for a while now," he says. "I’ve worked for so long now and received nothing [no recognition], so when everything is working, it would feel silly to waste it all away."

New Moon shines in November, 2009.

I`m not dating anyone [Robert Pattison]

Robert Pattinson: 'I'm Not Dating Anyone'

By TheImproper.com

Twilight heartthrob Robert Pattinson has been keeping a low profile since he jetted to London Dec. 22 to celebrate the Christmas holidays with his family.

Pattinson, 22, has not been spotted out (at least by paparazzi) in either London or Los Angeles since then, but the media fascination with him has only intensified since Twilight's Nov. 21 U.S. debut.

Fortunately, Rob has learned a thing or two about not letting the white-hot media glare get to him. In 2005, Pattinson starred as Cedric Diggory in the blockbuster fantasy Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Watching how well the film's stars, Daniel Radcliffe, 19, Rupert Grint, 20, and Emma Watson, 18, handle overnight fame and fan adoration has given Rob some perspective.

"The Harry Potter people...are still very, very normal and sane," says Pattinson. "I think it's because they just ignored the surrealness of their lives from an outside perspective and live their lives normally. They didn't treat anyone any differently and didn't treat themselves differently. And they've ended up being completely fine."

However, it bears noting that the fan hysteria and media spectacle surrounding the young Harry Potter stars wasn't nearly as overwhelming, nor were any of them thrust into overnight worldwide heartthrob status as Pattinson has been.

[Editor's note: Check out this video tribute to Rob featuring Justin Timberlake's track SexyBack.]

But the unattached Rob maintains a proper perspective on all the adoration. "I'm not dating anyone," he says. "I don't avoid it, but it's weird just knowing that people will talk about stuff."

The reserved and private Rob is also careful to avoid coming off as a womanizer simply for being friendly. He says: "If you try and chat people up, everyone's like, ‘You're just an actor. You probably go around sleeping with everybody.’ So it kind of has the converse effect of what you would have thought."

For the moment, the British hunk has a lot on his plate: In March, he will start shooting New Moon, the sequel to Twilight, in Vancouver and immediately afterward will film the franchise's third installment, Eclipse (2010.)

Separately, Rob has two other movies coming out in 2009. In Little Ashes, which hits theaters March 27, Pattinson portrays the enigmatic artist Salvador Dalí. And in April, Rob can be seen in Summer House, where he plays a boy (Richard) who follows his girlfriend Jane to France for the summer.

New Moon hits theaters in November, 2009.

I didn`t have a girlfriend until I was 18 [Robert Pattison]

Rob: 'I Didn't Have a Girlfriend Until I Was 18'

Twilight hunk recalls being a shy loner during his youth
By TheImproper.com

Twilight hottie Robert Pattinson was a late bloomer who says he didn't have a girlfriend until he was 18. But interestingly, he had his first kiss at the tender age of 12—during a game of spin the bottle!

Rob, 22, has since blossomed into an overnight Hollywood sensation, but the level-headed Brit confesses he isn't a ladies' man. In fact, Rob says he has never been in love. "I was a bit of a loner at school, quite anti-social," he recalls. "My first kiss was when I was 12, but I didn't have a girlfriend until I was 18."

What a difference a few short years makes! Now, the handsome (and single) 6'1" star can't even go to a nightclub without paparazzi swarming him, thanks to his newfound star status courtesy of Twi's monster success. The vampire romance has grossed a staggering $263 million worldwide since its Nov. 21 U.S. debut. Fortunately, Twi's devoted fans won't have to wait too long for a sequel.

New Moon (the second installment in the best-selling Twilight book series), will begin shooting in March with both Pattinson and his co-star Kristen Stewart, 18, set to reprise their roles as star-crossed lovers Edward Cullen and Bella Swan.

Production on the highly anticipated sequel will be rushed to accommodate a November 2009 release. And a third installment, Eclipse (2010), will be shot back-to-back with New Moon.

But can Rob handle all the adoration and attention? While he admits the white-hot media glare can be bewildering at times, he remains level-headed about it all.

"It's funny to see my face on t-shirts, but I'm grateful to be part of this massive phenomenon," says Pattinson. "There are only so many times this is going to happen in your life."

Interestingly, modest and self-effacing Rob says people often confuse him for his character. "[Some fans] say, "Sorry! I called you Edward." Considering how adored the Edward character is by millions of people around the world, that's hardly an unflattering comparison.

I don`t think I`m good-looking! [Robert Pattison]

Rob Pattinson: 'I Don't Think I'm Good-Looking'

Self-effacing Twilight hunk hates watching himself on the big screen
By TheImproper.com

Twilight hottie Robert Pattinson has the world at his feet. The previously unknown British actor has been catapulted onto the Hollywood A-List, thanks to his star-making turn as the mysterious and irresistible vampire, Edward Cullen.

But Pattinson--who now attracts hordes of screaming girls everywhere he goes--doesn't understand his appeal. "I never really considered myself attractive," says Rob, 22. "I was always kind of gangly in school."

Ironically, Edward is described in the Twilight book series as an unspeakably beautiful Adonis by the protagonist, Bella Swan (played by the beautiful Kristen Stewart).

Pattinson admits he was intimidated when he walked in to audition for the part and tried hard to focus more on Edward's deep emotional connection to Bella rather than his dazzling appearance. In fact, Rob says he almost skipped the audition because he was unsure he could pull off the physicality required of the stunningly handsome Edward character.

"That’s the reason I didn’t want to go in for the part initially, because it’s really putting yourself out there," Pattinson explains. "Going in for the audition, I felt like a bit of an idiot. I felt prejudged by anyone who turned up to the casting. I just thought even having the gall to go in means you’re a bit of an arrogant prick."

But even after landing the coveted role (beating out 5,000 other actors who had auditioned for it), the dashing 6'1" Rob still doesn't consider himself a hottie.

"Good-looking? Noooo,” he says. "Before I go out to face a crowd, I stare and stare at myself in the mirror until I have to tell myself to stop staring, since there’s nothing I can do.” Is it because he's concerned about not living up to fans' high expectations? "Yes."

Despite Pattinson's self-doubt, he has become a bona fide global matinee idol, and Twilight continues to tear up the box office, having grossed over $263 million worldwide since its Nov. 21 release. But don't expect Rob to re-watch his hit film anytime soon.

"I don't really like watching my stuff," he says. "It makes me feel sick. You imagine you look a certain way in your head, and when it looks even the slightest bit different from what you imagine, you go, 'Rubbish!'

I`ve never been in love! [Robert Pattison]

Robert Pattinson: 'I've Never Been In Love'

By TheImproper.com

Twilight star Robert Pattinson says he has never been in love. "I've never really fallen in love, but I try to be as romantic as possible," says Pattinson, 22.

That's an interesting admission coming from a young star who's now the obsession of millions of fans around the world, thanks to Twi's astonishing success.

The 6'1" British hunk, who confesses that he was a loner during his youth, says he has generally had little success with the ladies. "About a year ago, I'd talk to girls and no one would be interested," he says. Obviously, that has now all changed.

Twilight, which started out as a low-budget indie flick with a small cult following, has raked in a staggering $279 million worldwide since its Nov. 21 U.S. release.

The vampire romance, which was produced by Summit Entertainment for just $37 million, has mushroomed into a lucrative franchise. A sequel, New Moon, has been greenlit with a $50 million budget and will start shooting in March. And a third installment, Eclipse, will be shot back-to-back with New Moon, with both films to be released in consecutive years.

Twilight's unexpected mainstream popularity has made overnight sensations of Pattinson and his beautiful co-star, Kristen Stewart, 18. But Rob finds his newfound star status overwhelming at times. "I'm a bit of a loner and not that good with dealing with loads of people," Pattinson told U.K.'s Bliss magazine. "Most of the time, going out is a complete waste of time. I'd rather stay in and create something than go out."

[Editor's Note: Check out this touching video featuring the single Flightless Bird from the Twilight soundtrack].

So, what does the single Pattinson find attractive in the opposite sex? Interestingly, it's the same qualities that so many find appealing in his mysterious Edward Cullen character.

"It's being unreadable," says Rob. "It's attractive in women as well, that kind of mystique. It's so obvious, but so few people do have it, especially in characters now and in modern society where there's so many celebrities."

Edward`s amber eyes drove me crazy! [Robert Pattison]

Rob: Edward's Amber Eyes Drove Me Crazy!

Twilight hunk struggled with colored contacts during filming
By TheImproper.com

The eyes supposedly say it all, but Twilight star Robert Pattinson had a hard time expressing any emotion through character Edward Cullen’s amber-colored eyes.

That’s because the blue-eyed Rob was forced to wear amber contact lenses to look the part of the brooding Edward. When he reprises his role in the film’s sequel, New Moon (2009), it won't be without some discomfort, Rob reveals, because the tinted lenses irritate his eyes.

Pattinson, 22, has already signed a multi-million dollar deal to play Edward again in the franchise's two sequels that will be filmed through 2010. Both are also based on Stephenie Meyer's best-selling book series.

But there's one aspect of the character he’s not looking forward to. "Wearing colored contact lenses...It was like I constantly had sand in my eyes,” he told OK! magazine.

“I was wearing them for three months constantly and my eyes never ever accepted them," explains Rob. "It took me 20 minutes per eye every single day and I ended up having to literally fold it into my eyeball."

The "two orange blobs" in his eyes, he says, curbed his ability to act, because he couldn't properly use his eyes to portray his character's emotions. "It was frustrating as well because normally your eyes are saying something, but if you've got two orange blobs in your face it's so annoying.”

"The director [Catherine Hardwicke] would say, 'Look at [Bella] (played by Kristen Stewart) like you love her,' and I'd be like, 'I'm trying!' I'm going to have to do it again because we're making the sequel next year."

The sizzling on-screen chemistry between Pattinson and Stewart elevated the film's romantic story line. Kristen, 18, says the hunky 6'1" Pattinson was perfect for the role.

"Not to put down any of the other actors who came in [to audition], because they were really good, but everyone came in playing Edward as this perfect, happy-go-lucky guy," says Kristen. "But I got hardcore pain from Rob. It was purely just connection.”

I don`t have much luck with girls [Robert Pattison]

Rob Pattinson: 'I Don't Have Much Luck With Girls'

Before Twilight, British hunk says no one wanted to commit to him
By TheImproper.com

Twilight heartthrob Robert Pattinson may be the romantic ideal of millions of girls around the world, but he wasn't always so popular with the opposite sex.

Before Twilight emerged as a cult phenomenon, Pattinson — who doesn't even think he's good-looking — tried in vain to land a girlfriend.

"Last year all I was trying to do was get a girlfriend," Rob laments. "No one else seems to get into a relationship with me; no one wants to commit."

Obviously, that has all changed now that Pattinson has become an international matinee idol, thanks to his star-making turn as the irresistible vampire Edward Cullen.

Unfortunately, the problem now may be that Rob is so busy with his career that he won't have any time to date. In March, Rob will begin shooting New Moon, the highly anticipated sequel to Twilight.

But don't expect Rob to get a swelled head because of his newfound star power. "My dad said success and failure were both impostors," says Pattinson. "That's the best way to go about acting, especially when everything is so extreme."

[**Editor's note: British poet Rudyard Kipling said something similar when he wrote: "If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster and treat those two impostors just the same, yours is the earth and everything that's in it. And—what's more—you'll be a man, my son."]

With his career skyrocketing, onscreen romances will have to do for a while. "I'm single at the moment but I read stories that I'm dating so-and-so, but it's not true," says Robert. "But they are very good guesses because I always fancy the girl they pair me up with."

Somehow, it wouldn't surprise us if the feeling were mutual. New Moon comes out in November 2009.

Kristen Stewart [Bella Swan] - biography

Kristen Stewart was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, where she also currently lives with her family.[1][2][3] Her father, John Stewart, is a stage manager and television producer who worked for Fox.[4] Her mother, Jules Mann-Stewart, is a scriptwriter who came from Sydney, Australia.[5][6][3][7] She attended school until the seventh grade, and then continued her education by correspondence.[3] She has an older brother, Cameron Stewart,[8] and is a guitar player.[9] A fan of rock music, her favorite bands include U2, Radiohead, The Beatles, The Specials, Laura Marling, Green Day, Nirvana and Beck.[10][11] In a 2008 interview with Vanity Fair, Kristen confirmed she is dating actor Michael Angarano.[12] Stewart has expressed a desire to live and work in Australia, saying, "I want to go to Sydney University in Australia. My mom's from there."[13] Stewart is very close friends with with her Twilight co-star Nikki Reed.[14]

Career

Stewart's acting career began at the age of eight, after an agent saw her perform in her elementary school's Christmas show.[15] Stewart's first role was a short, nonspeaking part in the Disney Channel TV production The Thirteenth Year.[4] She subsequently appeared in the independent film The Safety of Objects, in which she played the tomboy daughter of a troubled single mother (Patricia Clarkson). Stewart had a major role in the Hollywood film Panic Room, playing the sullen, diabetic daughter of a divorced mother (Jodie Foster). The film received generally positive reviews, and Stewart garnered positive notices for her performance.

After Panic Room's success, Stewart was cast in another thriller, Cold Creek Manor, playing the daughter of Dennis Quaid and Sharon Stone's characters; the film generally failed at the box office. Her first starring role followed, in the children's action-comedy Catch That Kid, opposite Max Thieriot and Corbin Bleu. Stewart also played the role of Lila in the thriller Undertow. To date, Stewart's most critically acclaimed role may be in the television film Speak (2004), based on the novel by Laurie Halse Anderson. Stewart, thirteen at the time of filming, played high school freshman Melinda Sordino, who stops almost all verbal contact after being raped and who deals with enormous amounts of emotional turmoil. Stewart received great praise for playing the character, who had only a few speaking lines, but kept up a dark-witted commentary inside her head throughout the film.

In 2005, Stewart appeared in the fantasy-adventure film Zathura, playing the role of Lisa – an irresponsible older sister of two little boys, who turn their house into a spacecraft hurtling uncontrollably in outer space by playing a board game. The movie received praise by critics, but Stewart's performance didn't garner much media attention as it was noted that her character is immobilized during most of the movie.[16] The following year, she played the character Maya in Fierce People, directed by Griffin Dunne. After that film, she received the lead role of Jess Solomon in the supernatural thriller movie The Messengers. The movie was successful commercially, however, it received highly negative reviews from critics.[17]

In 2007, Stewart appeared as teenager Lucy Hardwicke in In the Land of Women, a romantic drama starring Meg Ryan and The O.C. star Adam Brody. The movie, as well as Stewart's performance, received mixed reviews. That same year, Stewart starred in Sean Penn's critically acclaimed adaptation film Into the Wild. For her portrayal of Tracy – a teenage singer who has a crush on young adventurer Christopher McCandless – Stewart received generally positive reviews. Salon.com considered her work a "sturdy, sensitive performance"[18], and the Chicago Tribune noted that she did "vividly well with a sketch of a role."[19] Meanwhile, Variety magazine's critic Dennis Harvey commented skeptically, "It's unclear whether Stewart means to be playing hippie-chick Tracy as vapid, or whether it just comes off that way."[20] After Into the Wild, Stewart had a cameo appearance in Jumper and also appeared in What Just Happened, which was released in October 2008.[21] She also co-stars in The Cake Eaters and The Yellow Handkerchief, both independent films that have only been screened at film festivals.

On November 16, 2007, Summit Entertainment announced that Stewart would play Isabella "Bella" Swan in the movie Twilight, based on Stephenie Meyer's bestselling vampire/human romance novel of the same name.[22] Stewart was on the set of Adventureland when director Catherine Hardwicke visited her for an informal screen test which "captivated" the director.[23] She stars alongside Robert Pattinson, who plays Edward Cullen, her character's vampire boyfriend. The film began production in February 2008 and finished filming in May 2008. Twilight was released domestically on November 21, 2008.[24] Stewart will be reprising her role as Bella in the sequel, New Moon, in 2009.

During a radio interview with Big O and Dukes of WJFK 1067, Jason Mewes stated that he is doing a movie called K-11 with Stewart and Nikki Reed, also of Twilight.[25] The film, which is being directed by Stewart's mother, takes place in a dorm of the Los Angeles County Jail, and will feature both Stewart and Reed as male characters.[5][26] Stewart was also cast to portray Joan Jett in The Runaways, a rock 'n' roll biopic of the titular band from writer-director Floria Sigismondi.[27]

Personal Quotes

Up until I was 12 my sisters used to dress me up as a girl and introduce me as 'Claudia'! Twelve was a turning point as I moved to a mixed school and then I became cool and discovered hair gel.

It's strange, somebody asked for my autograph the other day. Because I finished school and I'm not really doing anything at the moment, I was just kind of aimlessly wandering around London and these two guys who were about 30 came up and asked for my autograph. I was really quite proud at the time, and they wanted to take photos and stuff. And then they were sort of wandering around and I was kind of wandering around and I bumped into them about three times, and every single time their respect for me kept growing and growing and growing.

They [Barnes Theatre Club] were a very good group, and for some reason when I finished the backstage thing, I just decided to that I should try to act. So I auditioned for Guys and Dolls and got a little tiny part as some Cuban dancer or something and then in the next play I got the lead part, and then I got my agent. So I owe everything to that little club.

I aspire to be Jack Nicholson. I love his every single mannerism. I used to try and be him in virtually everything I did, I don't know why. I watched One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest when I was about 13, and I dressed like him. I tried to do his accent. I did everything like him. I think it kind of stuck with me.

The day before [the Harry Potter London premiere] I was just sitting in Leicester Square, happily being ignored by everyone. Then suddenly strangers are screaming your name. Amazing.

I went to one of these signing conventions. [in '06] It was one of the most interesting experiences I've had. It was so strange that people would pay for autographs. You keep thinking you should do a little dance for them as well or something.

I have been playing the piano for my entire life - since I was three or four. And the guitar - I used to play classical guitar from when I was about five to 12 years of age. Then I didn't play guitar for like years. About four or five years ago, I got out the guitar again and just started playing blues and stuff. I am not very good at the guitar, but I am all right. I am in a band in London as well.

My favorite teacher was probably my English teacher because she got me into writing instead of just answering the question. I used to hand in homework with 20 pages of nonsense and she'd still mark it. She was a really amazing teacher.

I didn't want to get stuck in pretty, public school roles, or I knew I'd end up as some sort of caricature. Playing Dali has been a complete turning point for me. It's the first part I've had that has required really serious thought. I became completely obsessed with Dali during the filming, and I read every biography I could get a hold of. He was the most bizarre, complex man, but in the end I felt I could relate to him. He was basically incredibly shy.

I wasn't at all focused on school, and I didn't achieve much. But I've got a sense of urgency now. I feel I can't let any more time waste away.

"Twilight' is a metaphor for the virtues of chastity, but it's had the opposite effect. I get letters that say "I'm going to kill myself if you don't watch 'High School Musical 2' with me. It's a little nuts.

Breaking Dawn book

Breaking Dawn
Stephenie Meyer

Summary (from the book jacket)

To be irrevocably in love with a vampire is both a fantasy and a nightmare woven into a dangerously heightened reality for Bella Swan. Pulled in one direction by her intense passion for Edward Cullen, and in another by her profound connection to werewolf Jacob Black, she has endured a tumultuous year of temptation, loss and strife to reach the ultimate turning point. Her imminent choice, to either join the dark but seductive world of immortals or pursue a fully human life, has become the thread from which the fate of two tribes hangs.

Now that Bella has made her decision, a startling chain of unprecedented events is about to unfold with potentially devastating and unfathomable consequences. Just when the frayed strands of Bella’s life – first discovered in Twilight, then scattered and torn in New Moon and Eclipse – seem ready to heal and knit together, could they be destroyed… forever?
The Review

Breaking Dawn is the fourth and final novel in Stephenie Meyer’s hugely popular Twilight saga. With all the hype surrounding the release of Breaking Dawn I doubt that there is anyone left on the planet that isn’t aware of the books publication! However, readers who haven’t read any of the previous books in this saga should not be tempted to start here – you really need to read these books in order since the story continues over the series.

For readers who have read Stephenie Meyer’s previous offerings Breaking Dawn is the long awaited and highly anticipated end to the compelling tale of vampire Edward and human Bella’s impossible romance. Beginnings can be tricky but Twilight got this series off to a fantastic start with its modern day fairy tale quality and heart stopping romance. New Moon further built on that with Bella and Edward’s bleakly painful separation and subsequent happy reunion - but since the end of New Moon the romantic tension that had been driving the story into the heady heights compelling reading has been lacking.

As a result Eclipse was a different novel – it was clear that what ever happened in Eclipse Edward and Bella would be together forever – and the stresses on their relationship came from outside forces rather than from within the relationship itself. Breaking Dawn is similar. The romantic tension between Edward and Bella is non-existent – it is clear that whatever happens to them (death, Jacob, mutant vampire baby) their love is non-negotiable and to a certain extent this alters the feel of the story, losing some of the romantic magic of Twilight in the process.

If beginnings are tricky, endings are fraught with difficulties. At the beginning readers have no expectations but by the end everyone seems to have an opinion on how they would have finished the book if they were writing it. Thankfully Stephenie Meyer was writing the ending so the resulting story is a good one and in my opinion a fitting end to this fantastic series.

In Breaking Dawn Stephenie Meyer addresses one of the major issues that some readers had with Bella’s character – namely that she wasn’t independent enough. This novel sees Bella coming into her own power and proving that she is more that capable of independent thought and action. While the Cullen family vampires have always been kind to Bella, it has been clear that she was no match for this talented bunch - but Bella’s character gains strengths that make her just as unique and talented as the rest of her new family.

Breaking Dawn is a weighty novel, weighing in at over 750 pages but it doesn’t feel like a long read. The story is well paced and well balanced, with a mixture of exciting supernatural action as well as good character development and romance. The strength of Stephenie Meyer’s writing as ever lies in her exploration of love in its many guises and Breaking Dawn gives her the opportunity to examine the relationships between mother and child, father and daughter, husband and wife and the bonds of friendship.

Breaking Dawn is a different novel to Twilight (and New Moon) and some readers may be disappointed by this but I’m not one of them. I don’t want to keep buying the same story over and over again just with a different title and cover picture – I enjoy seeing the development of the characters as well as seeing the development of the author’s writing. Breaking Dawn is more like Eclipse, Edward and Bella are sure of their love for each other but outside forces (this time it’s the Volturi) may tear them apart as the story reaches its thrilling climax.

The only small gripe I have about this novel is that in wrapping up the story every loose end has been neatly tied into a pretty bow - sometimes it’s good to leave something dangling in the breeze! Oh, and I don’t like the book's cover either. But apart from that, this book is all that I was personally hoping it would be.

Full of Forks goodness, Breaking Dawn is recommended reading for any self-respecting Stephenie Meyer fan.

Eclipse book

Eclipse
Stephenie Meyer

Summary (from the book jacket)

"BELLA?"

Edward's soft voice came from behind me. I turned to see him spring lightly up the porch steps, his hair windblown from running. He pulled me into his arms at once, just like he had in the parking lot, and kissed me again.

This kiss frightened me. There was too much tension, too strong an edge to the way his lips crushed mine—like he was afraid we had only so much time left to us.

As Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge, Bella once again finds herself surrounded by danger. In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between her love for Edward and her friendship with Jacob—knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the ageless struggle between vampire and werewolf. With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella has one more decision to make: life or death. But which is which?
The Review

Eclipse is the third novel in Stephenie Meyer’s popular Twilight series. You really want to have read Twilight and New Moon (in that order) first before reading Eclipse, because the author doesn’t spend too much time expounding the story-lines of the previous novels but rather drops the reader straight in to the story. You also want to read Twilight and New Moon because they are both excellent novels and, trust me, you are missing out if you haven’t read them.

Eclipse carries on not long after New Moon left off. Bella’s high school graduation is approaching and she will soon be leaving Forks forever, ostensibly to go to college - but in reality she is planning to join her boyfriend in his vampire existence and will therefore be unable to return home, due to being dead and possessed by a terrible blood lust for the first few years. Not that the reader is actually taken that far in this story, we make it through graduation but then the dangerous vampires from Seattle come to Forks and dealing with them dominates the rest of the novel.

This is only one part of the story though. Eclipse is primarily a romantic saga, so Bella and Edward’s relationship is the primary focus of the novel. Or as I should say Bella, Edward and Jacob’s relationship - because there is a love triangle in the plot of this novel.

Bella and Jacob have always been friends, at least they were - right up until Jacob became a werewolf. Then the enmity between vampires and werewolves put a huge strain on their friendship. Besides which, Jacob is in love with Bella, who is in love with Edward so this is going to make things awkward between them.

At this point, Eclipse descends into soap opera territory – Bella has found her soul mate in Edward but Jacob is the soul mate she should have / could have / would have had if Edward didn’t exist. She loves him too but not as much as Edward. Why she loves Jacob is beyond me – he knows that she loves Edward but Jacob still tries to make her feel guilty that she can’t love him like he wants her too. Blatant emotional blackmail is unattractive whatever way you serve it up and it detracted from his otherwise fine character. Worse, it lead to a large proportion of this book being devoted to teenage angst and with this book being 628 pages long that a substantial amount of angst!

To be fair, Eclipse is written for the young adult market so I really shouldn’t complain about the teen angst and the drama but for me it meant that this book lacked the magical quality that made Twilight stand out from the crowd of vampire romances available in bookstores today. Don’t misunderstand me - Eclipse is still a really good read. The book didn’t feel like it was over 600 pages long, I literally flew through the pages and had to make a conscious effort to slow down my reading so I didn’t finish the whole book in a couple of sittings.

For teens already hooked on the series, Eclipse is another solid instalment of Forks goodness. Adult readers may be put off by the teenage relationship angst in this novel but if you have already enjoyed the author’s previous offerings I think there is still plenty here to entertain.

It will be intriguing to see where Stephenie Meyer takes the ideas and characters in this series next. Writing for the Young Adult market always means that there is some expectation for the author to set a good example for impressionable young minds yet criticisms that Bella’s character is too dependent and needs to set a better example for young women seem unfair. This is romantic fantasy – enjoy it!

New Moon book

New Moon
Stephenie Meyer

Synopsis

Bella has been going out with her vampire boyfriend Edward for six blissfully happy months. The only thing that worries her is his steadfast refusal to even consider making her into a vampire like him. As the day of her eighteenth birthday rolls around she feels less than happy because she is now older than Edward, who will never age past seventeen.

To celebrate her birthday Edward takes Bella to a birthday party at his family home but when a stupid accident that leaves Bella covered in blood and nearly triggers a feeding frenzy in Jasper, Edward’s brother, the party falls somewhat flat.

Edward suddenly becomes more distant towards to Bella and finally he tells her that he and his family are leaving Forks, to never return, and he no longer wants to see her.

Edward is Bella’s whole world and his abandonment is a harsh blow. Her whole world falls apart and as she becomes withdrawn from the world she soon loses most of her friends becoming even more isolated and lonely.

When she does something dangerous she starts hallucinating and thinks she can hear Edward telling her not to do anything stupid and to be more careful. This leads to a whole new range of interests for Bella including learning to ride a motorbike and cliff diving because she feels that he is still with her at those times. Her old friend Jacob Black becomes her partner in crime, fixing up her motorbike for her and teaching her to ride it. Although the pain of Edward’s departure never leaves Bella, Jacob soon becomes her best friend and he helps to fill some of the voids in her life.

Jacob himself is no ordinary boy and soon Bella discovers that part of his Quileute heritage is to be cursed to be a werewolf. Certain members of the tribe turn into werewolves in their teenage years in response to the presence of vampires. Werewolves and vampires are natural enemies and the enmity runs deep on both sides.

Alice returns to Forks and although she brings no news of Edward with her, her extraordinary gift of being able to see the future soon tells her that Edward is heading on a path of self destruction that only Bella can advert. But will Bella be in time to stop the tragedy?
The Review

New Moon is the sequel to Stephenie Meyer’s remarkably good debut novel Twilight. This novel works well enough as a stand alone but I think that you will get a better understanding of the story and maximum enjoyment from reading it if you have read Twilight first.

New Moon is always going to be compared to Twilight and people who are expecting this novel to be essentially the same as Twilight may be disappointed. Twilight had an almost dreamy, fairytale quality to the writing, which this story lacks. The Cullen family of vampires are also absent from a large proportion of New Moon, and vampire fans may keenly feel their absence. Do not let this put you off reading the book however because it is still one of the best books that I have read this year.

The story is narrated in first person by Bella and has an obvious parallel with Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and I mean obvious because even Bella recognises that she is in danger of playing out history’s greatest romantic tragedy. I think keeping Romeo and Juliet in the forefront of the readers mind actually helps the author build the tension for the climax of the story because we can all see the tragedy that is waiting to happen.

The pain that Bella feels when Edward abandons her is extremely well written and is really what this story is about. Most of the things that happen to Bella in New Moon are as a result of the overwhelming loss that she is trying to bear. Her friendship with Jacob has a doomed quality to it not only because he obviously loves her while she is in love with Edward but because he is a werewolf and he naturally hates all vampires.

For fantasy fans, the story isn’t all about Bella and her emotional pain. The rogue vampires Laurent and Victoria return to Forks. They are looking for revenge against Edward but they only find Bella. The Quileute werewolves are an exciting addition to the story and it will be interesting to see how this plot line is developed in the next novel in this series.

I stayed up until the early hours of the morning reading this book because once I was caught up in the story I couldn’t stop reading. I’m sure I’m not the first person, and won’t be the last person either, to say that about this novel. New Moon is highly recommended reading.

Twilight book

Twilight
Stephenie Meyer

Synopsis

When seventeen year-old Bella Swan leaves sunny Arizona to live with her father in the small and gloomy Pacific North-West town of Forks she doesn’t expect to like it. After all she has made excuses not to go there enough times over the past few years. If living in Forks, with its constant mist and rain, wasn’t bad enough she will have to make a whole new set of friends and settle into a new school.

Bella soon makes some new friends at school but when she sees a boy called Edward Cullen sitting with his brothers and sisters in the cafeteria she is instantly intrigued. Edward is stunningly attractive, almost inhumanly beautiful, and yet he is an outsider too. Although Edward and his family have lived in Forks for two years they have never really been accepted by the townsfolk.

At first Edward is aloof, sometimes it almost seems like he can’t stand to be in the same room as her, but eventually they strike up an unlikely friendship. Even as Bella falls hopelessly and irrevocably in love with Edward, she still can’t work out exactly what makes him so different to everyone else.

On a trip to the beach, Bella is told of the local legend about the “cold ones”, a group of blood drinkers who have sworn off hunting humans but are still not welcome on Indian land because vampires are not to be trusted. Realising Edward is vampire changes nothing for Bella, she knows that she still loves him even if he’s not human.

Edward and his whole family are vampires. Edward himself was made a vampire when he was seventeen years-old, although that was at the end of World War I. For Edward his love for Bella is both a delight and a torment. A delight because she is the first person he has loved since he was made a vampire. A torment because although he has sworn off human blood and only hunts animals the craving for human blood never truly leaves him and the very scent of her also stirs his hunger for blood….
The Review

Twilight is the story of Edward and Bella’s romance. Forget any vampire romance you have read before, Twilight is so unique it is almost like it’s in its own genre. The book is marketed at Young Adult readers but it has the ability to cross age barriers and will satisfy both teenagers and adults alike.

The story is told in first person from the perspective of Bella, so the reader only ever know what she knows, making Edward and his family a mystery that is slowly unravelled through out the book. Even by the end of the book I was still thirsting for more of the Cullen family back story - hopefully their characters might be developed further in future books. Bella herself is a well written and realistic character, shy and lacking in confidence, her sarcastic inner voice narrates the story for the reader.

Twilight is simply and yet beautifully written. The descriptions of Forks leave you feeling like you can almost smell the damp air and hear the rain falling on the roof.

The romance between Edward and Bella is both touching and compelling. There is a melancholic feel to their impossible love, yet at the same time they both are unwilling to give up hope that their relationship is not doomed. The book reaches a fever pitch of excitement as the romance between Bella and Edward turns into a frantic race to stay alive.

I have heard Twilight described as “a vampire story for people who don’t like vampire stories” and I think I would agree with that. This book really has something for everyone. Young adult readers, vampire fans or romance readers will all find Twilight to be an appealing story.

For a Young Adult novel the book is quite long but don’t let that put you off reading it because each page is to be savoured. Believe me, this is one book that you won’t want to end.
